Upgrading of illumination system at Vilnius Railway Station
Fluorescent and incandescent bulbs have been used in the illumination system of the Vilnius railway system until the present time. Upgrading of illumination with LED lighting fixtures covered the corridor of the railway station, an underground passage, exits leading to platforms, left-luggage office, and information display boards. General effect of the project: electricity costs reduced by more than fourfold; reduced operating (maintenance) costs and enhanced lightness.
Vilnius railway station corridor (Pictures 1 and 2)
Instead of the previous 18W lighting fixtures, 2.5W LUMO SPOT1 bulbs with intensity control function were mounted. Half of the bulbs shine at 100% intensity, the other half – at 20% intensity. It may be programmed, however, that all lighting fixtures shined at 100% intensity during the necessary time of the day. After upgrading the illumination system, better lightness in this part of the station was obtained and nine-fold electricity savings have been achieved by maintaining the lighting standards of the corridor even when the lighting fixtures operate in standby mode.
In addition, latent lighting was installed in the corridors – LED modules were mounted instead of 36W luminescent bulbs what enabled to cut the power costs by more than threefold.

The previously used 54W fluorescent bulbs were replaced with LUMO Line 8lighting fixtures that consume only 18W of electricity. An economic effect was achieved – threefold cut down on energy costs. Besides, the intensity of lighting was enhanced. An additional economic benefit is gained by reducing the intensity of lightness at a particular time of the day when there are no people in the premises.
Picture 3. The left picture shows a platform passage with a turned-off group of LED lighting fixtures, and in the right picture – with all fixtures operating at 100% intensity.
Information display boards at Vilnius railway station platforms (Picture 4)
18W fluorescent information display boards were replaced with two 2.5W LUMO SPOT1 bulbs. The lightness of display boards remained the same, whereas the energy costs decreased by approximately three times.

Left-luggage office at Vilnius railway station (Picture 5)
Instead of 72W fluorescent lighting fixtures, 36W LUMO60 LED lighting fixtures were mounted in the left-luggage office. The amount of energy consumed reduced twice; besides, the level of lighting was increased up to 110-150 Lux. When there are no people in the premises, movement sensors enable to cut down the level of intensity up to 20%, as a result whereof energy efficiency increased by even 10 times.
Fixtures in the passage leading to the left-luggage office were replaced using the very same principle.

Exits to platforms at Vilnius railway station (Picture 6)
Instead of 58W fluorescent bulbs, 18W LUMO Line 8 LED fixtures were mounted. This replacement alone enabled to achieve a significant electricity savings of 3.2 times. After installing a lighting control system that dims the light output up to 20% when there are no people in the exit, obtained electricity savings may even equal to 15 times. Moreover, bigger intensity of lightness was achieved than in previously used illumination system.
